Development Milestone: Infant and Child BY Nurses note

 Development Milestone



Development milestones are physical or behavioural changes seen in infant and children. Rolling over, walking and talking are considered development milestones. The milestones are various for each age group and provide essential data about your child early development 

AGE: 1 MONTH

  • GROSS MOTOR
    • Raises head slightly from prone
    • Makes crawling movements
  • MOTOR/VISUAL
    • Has tight grasp
  • LANGUAGE
    • Alert to sound
  • SOCIAL/ADAPTIVE/PERSONAL
    • Regards face

AGE: 2 MONTH

  • GROSS MOTOR
    • Holds head in midline 
    • Lifts shoulder while prone
  • MOTOR/VISUAL
    • No longer clenches fist tightly
    • Tracks past midline
  • LANGUAGE 
    • Smiles socially
    • Searches for sound with eyes
  • SOCIAL/PERSONAL/ADAPTIVE
    • Recognizes parent
    • Smiles responsively
AGE:3 MONTH

  • GROSS MOTOR
    • Support on forearm in prone
    • Holds head up steadily
  • MOTOR/VISUAL
    • Holds hands open at rest 
    • Follows in circular fashion
    • Respond in visual threat
  • LANGUAGE
    • Coos ( long vowel sounds in musical fashion)
  • PERSONAL/SOCIAL/ADAPTIVE
    • Reaches for familiar people or objects, anticipates feeding
AGE: 4 MONTH
  • GROSS MOTOR
    • Rolls front to back
    • Support on wrist
    • No head lag
    • If pulled to sit from supine

    • Reaches for object
    • Raking grasp
    • Brings hands to midline
  • LANGUAGE
    • Laughs
    • Orients to voice

    • Enjoys looking around environment 
AGE: 5 MONTH
  • GROSS MOTOR
    • Rolls back to front 
    • Sits supported
  • MOTOR/VISUAL
    • Transfers objects

    • Blows raspberries
    • Orient to bell (localizes laterally)
AGE: 6 MONTH
  • GROSS MOTOR
    • Sits alone
    • Puts feet in mouth in supine position
  • MOTOR/VISUAL
    • Transfer object  hand to hand
    • Uses raking grasp
  • LANGUAGE
    • Babbles

AGE: 7 MONTH

AGE: 12 MONTH

    • Walks alone

    • Uses mature pincer grasp
    • Releases voluntarily

AGE; 24 MONTH

    • Imitates stroke with pencil
